Sasa on Shaker Square
For all of you Cleveland food lovers, you should think about trying Sasa on Shaker Square. It’s the newest restaurant on the square and is in the location where the sushi restaurant (I forget the name!) had been.

Sasa is a “Japanese Izakawa Asian Bistro” which, if I interpret my dinner and the menu correctly, means Japanese tapas.

For example, the menu is organized into small, medium and large dishes. Sushi and soups are also on the menu. The beer and wine selection is good and there is a very nice saki menu as well.

Service was excellent, even on a Tuesday around 9pm. We were served promptly, never felt pushed to order just one more dish (as I’ve felt at some tapas style places), and the food was great.

For the record: we ordered the clam and corn soup to start, one order of smoked salmon sashimi, one order of escarole sashimi (a favorite), and the 5-mushroom chicken.

I wish I had remembered to pull out the phone to take a few photographs because the presentation was all very good. For example, the sashimi was artistically presented without going overboard. There have been times when I avoid sashimi because I get tired of tweezing salmon roses and tuna carnations into edible bits. I’m sure I’ll get back soon and take photos to post at that time…

The dishes were prepared properly. Nothing was over or under cooked. Everything tasted as I expected, which is usually what I want when I pay somebody to cook for me.

For dessert, we had a fruit tempura. I was skeptical because tempura is a funny dish. If not prepared properly, the dish can be soggy and oily. With vegetables or meat, this isn’t great but it doesn’t ruin the dish. With fruit, I was worried about getting an oily, soggy, deep-fried apple slice.

Nope. It was perfectly done. The batter had been fried to a crispy finish. Served along side the fruit were three sauces - cinnamon, caramel and chocolate - that were perfect dipping compliments to the tempura battered fruit.

I’ll leave it up to the multitude of other Cleveland food bloggers to visit and give you a comprehensive review. In the meantime, the quick and dirty recommendation from me is “go. eat. enjoy.”

Now, I’ve got to make time to get down to Americano in Bratenahl. I keep hearing good things about it.
