I have a friend, Brad, who lives in Wisconsin where they added an amendment to their constitution that bans any marriage or marriage-like contracts except between a man and woman.
If states, in a republic, are meant to be a ‘laboratory’ for government experiments, then I’m not sure what is being tested with votes like this.
Restrictions that do not address a specific responsibility (e.g. protecting the weak) or expand/protect a right (e.g. innocent until proven guilty) are certainly an experiment…much in the same way that Prohibition was an experiment. Such experiments, I believe, are doomed to fail and what we will learn is why government activities that are purely restrictive are bad.
But I digress: My point is to tell you that Brad has some interesting thoughts about it. Check it out.
