Integrity

So what is the ‘question mark’ in this plan? What will keep my writing here from turning into utopianism or empty words?

The answer is “integrity”.

“Integrity” is a complicated word. Politicians are always using the word. Companies say they have it when they talk about themselves. Philosophers have several definitions for what the word means. People want to know what it means.

For me, I’m going to go with a definition that Steven Carter, an author, proposed and I’ll paraphrase here:

  1. Understand what you believe (what is right and wrong?)
  2. Act upon your belief (even if it is costly)
  3. Explain your action as being motivated by your belief of right and wrong

This three-point definition is the bridge from writing this blog as a manifesto to something more meaningful.

So from here forward, one goal of this blog will be to connect my consideration about what I believe to actions. This blog is, by the defiinition that Carter provided, the third step of integrity.

Tomorrow, I’ll illustrate what I am going to try to do over the long-term with this blog and my own future…
